Fencers Compete at CIF All State Tournament

Fencing team members competed at the CIF All State Fencing Tournament this past Saturday, April 28th, at Galileo High School. Of the 26 competing fencers, 6 were Lowell fencers: Alex Cheng, Stefani Kahookele, Jayne Stewart, Rachael Ferguson, Jacqueline Woo and Monica Lee.  Although qualified for the tournament, Ofri Harlev and Walter Pan, did not enter since they were at a Robotics Club competition in St. Louis.

The Cardinals did well but did not dominate as they had at the All City competition. Alex Cheng continued his All City form and won his 3rd All State Title. But it was not an easy match, as he fought hard against a very determined Jeffrey Chen from Silicon Valley Fencing Center.

Chen is no stranger to Cheng, both fencers compete on the local tournament and national competition circuits. But on this day it was Cheng prevailing with a tough 15- 14 victory. This win for Cheng completes a near perfect Lowell fencing career. In the last four years he’s won the All City Individual title 4 times, and the All State Individual Title, 3 of the last 4 years.

In girls’ bouts, the final was a repeat of last year’s tournament. It was Kahookele defending her title against Eliza Klyce, of Convent. But there was no repeat championship for Kahookele, as Klyce defeated her 15-10. And being such a small tournament it inevitable that the lady cardinals would end up fencing each other. In the round of 8, Kahookele defeated Ferguson, 15-12. This victory then matched Kahookele against Stewart in the semi-finals, Kahookele defeated Stewart 15 -1, leading to the showdown against Klyce.

All City tournament surprises; Lee, and Woo, had tough battles and didn’t have much success. Lee who was ill, fought well, but was eliminated in the initial round of 16 losing to Judy Mai, Galileo, 10-15. Woo on the other hand, got to the round of 8 but then faced number 1 seed Klyce, who defeated Woo 15-3.

Still it was a good showing for Lowell fencers: Cheng – 1st, Kahookele – 2nd, Stewart – 4th, Ferguson – 7th, Woo – 8th, and Lee - 12th.
